How to Sage

A simple guide to clearing and refreshing your space with intention.

Saging,

also known as smoke cleansing, is a practice used to refresh the energy of a space, object, or even your own personal field. It is less about ritual and more about intention. When done mindfully, it can help you reset the atmosphere of a room and create a feeling of clarity and calm.

What You'll Need

• A sage bundle

• A fire-safe bowl or shell

• A lighter or matches

• An open window

• Clear intention

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1 — Prepare the Space

Open a window and take a slow breath. Set a clear intention for what you are releasing or inviting in.

Step 2 — Light the Sage

Light the tip until it begins to smolder, then gently blow out the flame so smoke rises.

Step 3 — Move Through the Space

Walk slowly around the room, allowing the smoke to drift into corners and around doorways.

Step 4 — Close With Intention

When finished, safely extinguish the bundle and take a moment to notice how the space feels.

If Smoke is not permitted in your space,

If smoke is not permitted in your space, you can adapt the practice. A spray made with sage essential oil and water can offer a similar mindful pause without smoke. You may also choose to simply move your hand counterclockwise around a room or object, focusing on the intention of clearing and refreshing the space. It is not the tool that creates the shift, but the clarity of your intention.

You don’t need to sage perfectly. You only need to be present. Intention shapes the experience more than the steps themselves.
